Despite differences of status (private vs. public) and mission, the two institutions share pedagogic values and currently desire cooperative engagement of the educational marketplace through joint programs and educational services. “The Colleges at Alfred” represents the latest effort of the Alfred State College Faculty Senate Merger Investigative Team to resolve the many difficult issues and concerns that seem to have become a point of impasse in the current consolidation discussions.

3 History of Alfred State College
Unique lineage Originating and chartered through New York State Legislation in 1908 as the New York State School of Agriculture at Alfred University. Chartered as a separate institution in 1948 Developed and changed over time Current mission is to become a four- and two-year polytechnic of national renown. History reveals a unique lineage for Alfred State College. Originating as part of Alfred University, Alfred State College was chartered as a separate institution in Alfred State College has developed and changed drastically over time. Alfred State College’s current mission is to become a four- and two-year polytechnic of national renown.

5 Commonalities Teaching-learning excellence
strategic plans mission statements Enrollment driven in order to remain fiscally strong Actively engaged the marketplace to maintain and increase enrollment Strategically evolved, to remain competitive in the marketplace through program review and development Both institutions promote teaching-learning excellence as evidenced by their respective strategic plans, mission statements, and Alfred State College’s self-study design document for The Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Both institutions are enrollment driven and both, in order to remain fiscally strong, have actively engaged the marketplace to maintain and increase enrollment. Both institutions have strategically evolved, to remain competitive in the marketplace, through program review and development, as evidenced by the creation of new programs and the deactivation of low-enrolled, high cost programs

7 Current Developments In May, 2002, Presidents announced that consolidation would be studied Both are at a crucial, decision-making juncture Obvious and compelling advantages from a successful union administrative efficiency economies of scale strategic marketability In May, 2002 President Rezak of Alfred State College and President Edmonson of Alfred University announced that some form of consolidation of the two schools would be studied. Both Alfred State College and Alfred University are now at a crucial, decision-making juncture. There are obvious and compelling advantages in administrative efficiency, economies of scale, and in strategic marketability that could result from a successful union of the institutions.

8 Potential synergy to penetrate the educational market
Create and nurture exciting new program offerings Seamless transfer Degree ladder 1+1=3 Single ‘Alfred’ brand name Student life and the quality of the ‘Alfred’ experience could be greatly enhanced. There is great potential to create and nurture exciting new synergistic program offerings that draw from the strengths of both schools. The concepts of ‘seamless transfer’, ‘degree ladder’, 1+1=3, and the single ‘Alfred’ brand name could all help to penetrate the competitive educational market. Student life and the quality of the ‘Alfred’ experience could be greatly enhanced.

9 Areas of significant concern
Proposed Transitional Model as presented by Presidents Alfred State College Faculty Senate has unanimously rejected the proposed Transitional Model as presented on October 2, 2002. There remain, however, several areas of significant concern to the faculty of Alfred State College with regard to the currently proposed Transitional Model as presented by Presidents Rezak and Edmondson. To that end, Alfred State College Faculty Senate has unanimously rejected the proposed Transitional Model.

11 Vision The Colleges at Alfred, a cooperative and co-managed public/private chartered corporation with degree granting status, provides the 21st century student with several entry and exit points with vast educational opportunities to obtain an education with depth and breadth to meet the demands of the workplace and society to become all that he or she desires and is capable of. Cooperative venture to jointly offer selected programs and educational services to enhance the student’s educational experience Phase One Ø       Marketing Statement - Alfred State College and Alfred University has agreed to proceed in a cooperative venture to jointly offer selected programs and educational services to enhance the student’s educational experience while attending either institution.  

13 Phase One - Innovation Legal Status
Contractual agreements exist to allow for academic delivery of programs, cooperative partnering of student affairs and support services, and shared use of physical facilities and services Co-managed and includes the Crossroads College Council as an advisory and implementation entity Phase One Ø       Legal Status - Contractual agreements exist to develop the cooperative and co-managed The Colleges at Alfred with the Crossroads College Council as the advisory and implementation entity for mutual growth. All new or substantially revised programs of both institutions are subject to review and endorsement by the Crossroads Council. Contractual agreements exist to allow for academic delivery of programs, based on expertise of the faculty and institution, to students enrolled in either institution. Contractual agreements exist to allow for cooperative partnering of student affairs and support services. Contractual agreements exist to allow for selected, shared use of physical facilities and services.
