Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz

Born in Warsaw, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz was a son of the painter, architect and an art critic Stanisław Witkiewicz. His mother was Maria Pietrzkiewicz Witkiewiczowa. His godmother was the internationally famous actress Helena Modrzejewska.

Witkiewicz was home-schooled and encouraged to develop his talents
Witkiewicz was home-schooled and encouraged to develop his talents. In 1903, Witkiewicz passed an external baccalaurate exam in Lviv. In 1904 Witkacy travelled to Italy through Vienna and Munish visiting every art gallery he found on his way. A year later, against his father's advice, he took up studies at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. Witkacy commited a suicide on 18 September 1939 after hearing the news of the Soviet Invasion of Poland.

PURE FORM After the studies he soon entered into a major creative phase called PURE FORM in paintings and theatre. He associated with a group of "formist" artists in the early 1920s and wrote most of his plays. He created a lot of fantastic paintings at this time.

TYPE C and D – Witkacy painted them during meetings and parties with friends and the portraits were full of caricatural and abstractional elements

One of the most interesting portraits by Witkacy Drew in pastels in 1928, nowadays it is in National Museum in Warsaw During the act of painting Witkacy didn’t want to create a real portrait of the person. He focused on his own emotions that’s why in the painting we can find elements of groteska and surrealism
