Sex Linked Traits Ms. Frazier Move seats if needed
2
Objectives I can define sex linked trait
I can solve a punnett square with sex linked traits Standard: 11) Determine the significance of and relationships between genes, chromosomes, proteins, and hereditary traits. Analyze the role of genes in determining genetic make-up, gender, and hereditary characteristics. Using systems of equations, explain the variation and distribution of genotypes and phenotypes expressed in plants and animals.

Color Blind Test
4
Sex Linked Trait a trait that is linked to the sex of an organism
XX = Female XY = Male Trait can be represented by an apostrophe
5
Sex Linked Trait * = Trait X*X XX X*Y XY X*X*
Male offspring who carry a sex linked trait usually express it because they have a X and a Y chromosome. Female offspring who carry a sex linked trait may not express it because they have another X chromosome to express.

Punnett Squares and Sex Linked Traits
7
X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XHED)
A local cattle farmer wants to breed his newest Holstein heifer to his Holstein bull. Heifer carries XHED but does not show symptoms of it. Genotype: X’X Bull does not carry XHED. Genotype: XY What is the likelihood of having a calf with XHED? What is the likelihood of having a calf who carries XHED? Together as class – on whiteboard

X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XHED)
Mother: X’X’ Father: XY What is the likelihood of a female offspring to carry XHED? What is the likelihood of a male offspring to carry XHED? Alone in notebook

Dog Breeding Activity Expectations Directions Puppies $750 $500 $250
Stay in your seat, unless told to move Be on task Talk quietly within your group You each are assigned a German Shepherd dog to breed Some of your dogs carry the X linked trait for hemophilia Use punnett squares to breed your dogs with the person next to you We will have different rounds to see which breeding pairs can make the most profit on puppies Make sure you are crossing MALE and FEMALE in your squares! $750 XY or XX $500 X’X $250 X’X’ or X’Y

Objectives I can define sex linked trait
I can solve a punnett square with sex linked traits I can differentiate the genotypes of males and females Standard: 11) Determine the significance of and relationships between genes, chromosomes, proteins, and hereditary traits. Analyze the role of genes in determining genetic make-up, gender, and hereditary characteristics. Using systems of equations, explain the variation and distribution of genotypes and phenotypes expressed in plants and animals.
