J.D. Salinger Born in 1919 and died in 2010.
Sued another writer for the copyright of his character’s from Catcher in the Rye. Sued a British writer for attempting to write a biography about him in which included some of Salinger’s letters. His mother changed her name in order to blend in culturally with his father’s side of the family. Briefly worked on a Caribbean Cruise ship before joining the Military during World War II. Avid follower of Zen Buddhism Married Claire Douglas and had two children.

Chapter 14 Summary Maurice and Sunny come back to Holden’s room for the remanding 5 bucks. Maurice ends up punching Holden in the stomach because he refused to pay Sunny the rest of the money. Holden imagines shooting Maurice six times, with a gun, in the elevator, and then having Jane come over and take care of Holden, tending to his needs.

Chapter 15 Summary: Holden sets up a date with Sally.
Holden talks about his experiences with those who do not have as much money as his family does. Holden eats breakfast with two nuns.

Holden has trouble feeling comfortable around people that hold different statuses as shown when he talks about the suitcases and Catholics. “As a matter of fact, my father was a catholic once. He quit though, when he married my mother” (146).

Chapter 16 Summary: Holden is wasting time before his date with Sally. He buys his sister a record and tries to find her in the park. Holden is reminiscing about how he would take trips to a museum when he was younger.

“The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was” (157). “The only thing that would be different would be you” (158).

Chapter 17 Summary: Holden goes on a date with Sally, but is interrupted when Sally reconnects with a man named George. Holden seems very hateful towards George. Holden asks Sally to run away with him, get married, and start a life by a brook. Holden gets angry and makes Sally cry when she declines Holden’s offer.
