1 Pro-poor sectoral tourism strategies developed by recognizing pluralism, dialogue of cultures and establishment of culture of peace in Eastern Anatolia Outputs: 1- A model for cultural conservation and tourism delivery for less developed regions produced, implemented in Kars 2- Capacities of enterprises/communities developed for increased income through cultural tourism 3- Local authorities and CSOs promote social cohesion

3 What is so exciting about this initiative?
- UN Joint Program (UN Reform) Expanded cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Support to government’s efforts in socio-economic development through tourism and cultural tourism Opportunity to cooperate with a very active City Council

4 Why Kars? Low levels of human development Regional disparities
Economic challenges Cultural wealth and tourism potential - cultural wealth with long history - civil architecture - cooperative and active civil society - active local authorities (Governor and Mayor)

5 What will UNDP add? System of business development services for culture and tourism enterprises in Kars Clustering analyses and initiatives Women’s entry to entrepreneurship Small scale income generating activities Coordinated efforts of civil society and local government in Kars on culture and tourism Platforms for exchange

6 On what basis? Global experience in local economic development
Experience in Eastern Anatolia (rural development, local economic development, tourism and entrepreneurship) Experience in competitiveness and clusters in Southeast Anatolia Experience in working with local organizations and City Councils, Women Councils, etc.

7 What is needed? Commitment and involvement of the government
Commitment, participation and involvement of the local stakeholders in Kars Coherent work between UN agencies e.g. UNDP will build on the capacity assessments conducted by UNWTO; UNDP will promote tourism awareness with the support of cultural heritage work conducted by UNESCO; All agencies will need local participation supported by UNDP
