Red Ribbon Week “Your future is key, so stay drug free!”

2 What is Red Ribbon Week? Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.

Tuesday- You Have the Power to Say No! - Superhero Day Wednesday- Your Future is Key- Dress for Success Day (future career outfits/uniforms) Thursday- Follow Your Dreams- Pajama Day Friday- Put a Cap on Drugs- Hat Day

4 Drug Use Among Youth • Among teens aged 12-17, 10.6 percent were current illicit drug users: marijuana, prescription-type drugs, inhalants, hallucinogens, and cocaine.

5 Risks People that start using drugs at a young age are at higher risk for becoming addicted. 13.4 percent of adults that tried marijuana at 14 or younger were considered illicit drug dependent or abusers Risk ranking for drug use: 12th graders (10 percent), college students and 19-to 28-year-olds (both 8 percent), 10th graders (7 percent), and 8th graders (5 percent) Usage rates among 10th and 12th graders tended to be higher

6 Perception of Harm Risk determined by teens themselves:
Among teens approximately 35 percent perceived great risk from smoking marijuana once a month 49.6 percent perceived great risk from using cocaine once a month Smoking one or more packs of cigarettes per day was cited as a great risk by 67.5 percent of teens.

7 Long Term Effects of Drug Abuse
Alcohol: liver damage, heart problems, and physical dependence on alcohol Tobacco: cancer, emphysema, reduced lung capacity Marijuana: impaired problem solving, arrested emotional development, difficulty with memory recall, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders
