Mission Statement To provide outstanding young military leaders and unsurpassed opportunity to achieve fluency in a foreign language, pursue graduate study at an overseas university, and acquire an in-depth understanding of foreign cultures, thereby further equipping them to serve in positions of great responsibility as senior leaders in the United States Armed Forces.

Scholar Objectives Learn a foreign language fluently
Experience a foreign culture in depth Study in liberal arts subjects Earn a master’s degree routinely Interact with foreign citizens continually Grasp how others see the United States Enjoy fully quality time with family Prepare for future military leadership

Becoming a Scholar Active duty officers in specified career fields can apply (next slide) Application between 3 Years Commissioned and 11 Years Total Active Military Federal Service – no waivers Navadmin 082/17 was issued to allow designators 131x and 132x the opportunity to participate in a 3 year trial program that expands the service eligibility requirement from no more than 11 years to no more than 13.5 years. Given the compressed career timeline for Aviators through Department Head, this trial program is intended to evaluate whether this change would enable greater participation during a time frame that does not jeopardize career viability. Apply to Service Personnel Commands … Annual Message & Website Screening by Service Boards in Summer/Fall Interview by Olmsted Panel – Jan - Feb Final determination by Olmsted Board of Directors – March Services notify selected Scholars

Overseas Studies Olmsted BoD makes determination of city/school
Based on candidate’s input! Never sent to a country not on candidate’s list Service HQ recommendations also a factor Study in the liberal arts - no science, engineering, business, etc. Scholar responsible for getting orders, passports, enrolling in foreign university Former Scholars can provide info regarding school, city, etc. Scholar reports on our website are very helpful
