2. Introduction
In the spring of 2016 we carried out a research which was aimed at some local companies. We wanted to find out how many workers they employ in the field of environmental protection.
We visited three local companies – Vrsanska uhelna, H-REKULTIVACE and Severoceske vodovody a kanalizace.
We used a questionnaire and asked some questions which we had prepared before.

4. Vrsanska uhelna First, we visited a company called Vrsanska uhelna.
It is a very important mining company in our region.
We obtained a lot of information and enjoyed Mine Safari.

What is your scope of business? – Coal mining.
How many employees are there in your company? – 780.
Is there a department dealing with the environmental protection in your company? – 3 departments: 1 – A subsidiary company called Rekultivace, a. s.; 2 – Department of the environment; 3 – Reclamation department
What do its employees do? – 1 – Reclamation; 2 – Legal norms dealing with the environment protection; 3 - Reclamation
How many employees are there? What qualification do they need? – Number of workers: 1 – 120; 2 – 2; 3 – 3; Qualification: Geologists and engineers must have a university degree. Manual workers can do with primary education.

What is their workload? – 1 – Reclamations to order; 2 – Putting legal norms into practice; 3 – Reclamation projects and their funding.
Does this department communicate its results to the rest of the company? – Yes, via photo-documentation, business meetings, Mine newspapers, internal auditing, the intranet.
Does this department cooperate with other companies? – Mostly not because of business competition.
Does this department share its results with the public? – Yes, via TV, magazines, newspapers and books.
Is this department funded? How? – “15 ecologic billion Czech crowns”

10. H-REKULTIVACE (Answers) – Part 1
What is your scope of business? – Technical and biological landscape reclamation.
How many employees are there in your company? – 90.
Is there a department dealing with the environmental protection in your company? – No, there is not.
What qualification do your employees need? – They need to be trained in forestry and gardening.

11. H-REKULTIVACE (Answers) – Part 2
What is their workload? – Forestry reclamation, agricultural reclamation, landscaping around roads, maintenance of greenery, construction of bio- corridors, construction, maintenance of water areas.
Does this department communicate its results to the rest of the company? – No.
Does this department cooperate with other companies? – No.
Does this department share its results with the public? – Not much.
Is this department funded? How? – Hardly ever.

12. SCVK (Answers) – Part 1
What is your scope of business? – Full service in production and supply of drinking water, sewerage and wastewater treatment, running of wastewater treatment plants.
How many employees are there in your company? – 1,715.
Is there a department dealing with the environmental protection in your company? – Yes, the Department of Ecology.
What do its employees do? – They deal with legal norms regarding waste, chemicals and air protection and check whether they are put into practice.
How many employees are there? What qualification do they need? – 6. They must have a university degree in either chemistry or environmental studies.

13. SCVK (Answers) – Part 2
What is their workload? – Each employee has his/her allotted duties and he/she is responsible for their accomplishment.
Does this department communicate its results to the rest of the company? – Yes, via various analyses and data.
Does this department cooperate with other companies? – Yes, it does – with other water companies.
Does this department share its results with the public? – Yes, via reporting to authorities required by law.
Is this department funded? How? – No.

17. Summary
Each company we visited has its department dealing with environmental issues and protection.
Jobs within these companies are offered mainly to people trained in chemistry or/and sustainable development.
To be employed in a department of ecology or environmental protection one needs a university degree.
As for manual workers, they can do with primary education.
