1 Accessing Spatial Information from MaineDOT
Where to go now and what is planned down the road

2 Current Access Points for MaineDOT Spatial Data
Options to access MaineDOT spatial data include: MEGIS Data Catalog Shapefile, KML and WMS data access MaineDOT Public Map Viewer Interactive viewer with ability to download data ArcGIS Online Publicly shared layers and map services Open Data Portal Shared portals and MaineDOT specific portal Give the MaineDOT GIS Services Group a holler Custom data requests

3 Maine Office of GIS (MEGIS) Data Catalog
MEGIS provides data on their Data Catalog website organized by categories. There is a category for Transportation data where data can be downloaded in KML and Shapefile formats. URL: Limited data is available for transportation. Data is not refreshed often. MEGIS is moving to an Open Data access model.

4 MaineDOT Public Map Viewer URL: http://www.maine.gov/mdot/mapviewer/
General use mapping application for visualization and data access. Access to common MaineDOT datasets. Consistent symbology to allow many datasets to be viewed together with complex labeling. Ability to share map display. Download printable maps and map images. Remember your current display (user layers, extents and filters). URL parameters to initialize map to a particular display.

5 MaineDOT Public Map Viewer Data Layers Available
Use the Layers control to interact with different data. Initially shows the most common map layers. Use the Add button to find other map layers. Scroll through the list to see all layers available. Use the + button to add the layer to your map. Find specific information by searching for map layers. Start typing to filter your results.

6 MaineDOT Public Map Viewer Filter Map Layers and Download
Each layer can be filtered to show data meeting specific criteria (Data or Areas). Data filters can be used to query data using stacked conditional logic. Search areas are spatial filters allowing users to. search on any type of shape View all or filtered data in a tabular format. Download all or filtered data in Excel, Shapefile or KML formats.

7 ArcGIS Online URL: https://www.arcgis.com/
ArcGIS Online is a online GIS service by ESRI. The State of Maine is using the platform to disseminate data, maps and applications for internal and external users. Expect to see more offerings from MaineDOT and other State agencies that utilize this platform for templated applications and Story Maps. Licensed user accounts are required to login and take full advantage of the service. Note: Schools in the United States can gain access for free. Non-ArcGIS Online users can still search, view and interact. with data using the online search and map. Saving and modifying content will not be available though. Platform utilized to make data available to Open Data services.

8 ArcGIS Online Search Search for online content with the keyword “mainedot”. Add additional keywords to limit the results “mainedot” “bridges”. Make sure it is an official MaineDOT dataset.

9 ArcGIS Online Details Click on the Details link on any layer found to get more information including metadata. View data in tabular format and map based. Open data in online Map Viewer or ArcGIS Desktop product.

10 ArcGIS Online Map Viewer
View layers on an interactive map. Add filters and change symbology. Add as many layers as needed and/or the same layer multiple times. General tools are available with no account (Print, measure, search). With account access maps can be saved for later use and incorporated into applications templates. Note: Many layers will not work well directly added to a Map because of the number of records. Use filters and scale dependencies as needed.

11 Open Data Portal URL: https://opendata.arcgis.com/datasets?q=mainedot
Search for information by keywords and/or location. Add more keywords to refine your search. Click on the name in the search results to interact with that layer. The Overview page gives you access to: Visualize data in map and tabular formats Detailed metadata View in ArcGIS Online Download data Web-based API’s

12 Open Data Portal Download Data
Click Download Data to view options for full or filtered datasets in different formats: Spreadsheet KML Shapefile Filter data to download only the features meeting specific criteria. Click Filter button on column Limited filtering capabilities Make sure to download filtered data and not the full dataset

13 Open Data Portal Application Programming Interface – API’s
Access data directly in other applications in open formats: GeoJSON GeoService OGC WMS Filtered datasets can also be accessed by picking the proper URL API Explorer Build a URL to access a REST endpoint directly Query Spatial Inputs Output Options

15 Where are We going Next Implement a better data governance process for oversight of Open Data Update metadata Ongoing data validation Continue to add more Open Data layers. Create a MaineDOT specific Open Data Site. A single place to find MaineDOT spatial information. Build smaller focused applications including Story Maps available to the public at large. Give access to Routing Network. Use open architecture to improve engagement with partners. Workflows to share and collect information with different groups.
