By the end of the lesson the learner should be able to add one digit number to two digit numbers without carrying correctly.

The learner should be able to use place value tins to add one digit number to two digit numbers without carrying correctly.

Learning Activities Group sticks into bundles of tens and loose ones
Have two tins – one labelled tens(left) and the other ones(right) Put two single sticks in the ones tin(2) Put 4 single sticks in the ones tin and 4 bundles of tens in the tens tin(44) put 3 single sticks in the ones tin and one bundle of ten in the tens tin.(13) Count the number of sticks in the ones tin (9) and count the number of bundles of tens in the tens tin (7) conclude that = 9ones and 7 tens (79) i.e =79

RATIONALE The learners should be able to visualize the idea of place value - to see that in 79, 7 represents 7 tens and 9 represents 9 ones instead of memorizing it as 79. To apply the skill in real life situation ( business – buying and selling, Giving change…), keeping records that involve adding …etc. Pre requisite knowledge for higher order addition e.g. addition which involves carrying from ones…….etc. For comparison – e.g. adding marks and determining a winner Towards proficiency in addition of whole number
