BIODIVERSITY 3.3 The total number of living species is estimated at more than 5 million and may be as high as 50 million. Only of the likely species in Canada have been identified. Biological diversity, or biodiversity, is the variety of life found in an area. Biodiversity is often measured by counting the number of species in a habitat or ecosystem. This measurement of species numbers is called species richness. Tropical rainforests have the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem. 3.3 BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity under Attack
Humans are rapidly destroying Earth’s ecosystems. Many species are dying out, or going extinct. Extinction is a natural process, but human activity has drastically increased the rate of extinction. In the past 400 years, over 700 species of vertebrates have become extinct. In the past 170 years, 12 species in Canada have become extinct. The rate of human-caused extinction is increasing. extinct

3.3 Species at Risk When a population’s size declines below a critical level, the species will no longer be able to fill its ecological niche. This has consequences for the ecosystem. In Canada, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) categorizes species at risk into one of four categories. extirpated: when species no longer exist in the wild in one area, but still live elsewhere (for example, paddlefish from all of Canada) endangered: when species are in imminent danger of going extinct or becoming extirpated (for example, swift fox) threatened: when species are likely to become endangered if current trends continue (for example, humpback whale) special concern: when species may become threatened or endangered because of a combination of factors. (for example, polar bear) extirpated endangered threatened special concern
