Introduction & Background “1-2-3 Pap” Intervention Design Methods All women are at risk for cervical cancer. Human papilloma virus (HPV) strains 16 and 18 cause virtually all cervical cancer. With three doses of HPV vaccine, the majority of all cervical cancer cases can be prevented girls and women ages years. Located in the Great Smoky Mountains, Cooke County had the highest annual incidence rate of cervical cancer (17.0 per 100,000) in the state of TN ( ). In Cocke County, 40.5% of residents had ever heard of HPV. Maximizing HPV vaccine coverage is part of Tennessee’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Plan to reduce the state’s cervical cancer incidence rate. Research question: If women feel that they can decrease their risk of cervical cancer, they may increase their uptake and completion of the HPV vaccine. Intervention Population: women age years who have not received the HPV vaccine, recruited from family planning services in public and private settings in Cocke County Using focus groups and individual interviews, collect baseline data on women’s perception of risk for cervical cancer, knowledge of HPV, and perception of barriers preventing them from receiving the vaccination. Analyze qualitative data with NVivo qualitative data software (QSR International Pty Ltd. Version 10, 2012) Develop and test public health messages on the HPV vaccine Develop and test video to use in intervention Implement intervention according to “1-2-3 Pap” Protocols Proposed Intervention Health Belief Model Discussion & Conclusion This intervention may improve vaccination coverage and HPV awareness among women in Cocke County. Applying “1-2-3 Pap” in Cocke County may validate the findings of their approach. These results may provide an evidence-based tool for improving health outcomes among Appalachian girls and women “1-2-3 Pap” is a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded intervention to increase HPV vaccine initiation and coverage in Appalachian Kentucky. “1-2-3 Pap” uses a video, counseling, and social marketing to improve HPV vaccine coverage among women years. Women in intervention were 2.44 times more likely to complete vaccination series. Proposed Intervention: Use Health Belief Model to assess Cocke County women’s perceptions of their risk for cervical cancer and use “1-2-3 Pap” methods to improve vaccination coverage.
