2 U.S. Drops Claims to Texas
U.S. claims Texas as part of Louisiana Purchase in 1803 In 1819 the U.S. signs the Adams-Onis treaty with the U.S. giving up all claims to Texas It sets the border of the U.S. and Spain at the Sabine River In return, Spain gives Florida to the U.S. This treaty angers some Americans

4 Long Expedition One of those angry men was Dr. James Long
Organized a filibuster group that went into Texas He took his wife with him He attacked and took Nacogdoches and declared Texas free from Spain Went to Galveston Island for help

5 Long Expedition Continued
Asked for help from the Pirate Jean-Lafitte Lafitte refused to help him Spanish attacked and drove Long out of Texas Long gathers new forces in Louisiana and attacks La Bahia in 1821 Long captures La Bahia but later loses it to Spanish forces Jailed in Mexico City and was later shot and killed
