Review: 1) Give regardless of personal economic condition (2 Cor. 8:1-5) 2) Give to meet need – not greed (2 Cor. 8:8-15 3) Reasons to give include: The example of Jesus (2 Cor. 8:9) The principle of equality (2 Cor. 8:13-15)

4)The agent handling the distribution of the gift must be proven trustworthy (2 Cor. 8:16-24)
5) You must sow bountifully to order to reap bountifully (2 Cor. 9:6) 6) You are to give what you want freely (not grudgingly or of necessity) and joyfully (2 Cor. 9:7)

The harvest reaped includes: A) An abundance for good deeds
(2 Corinthians 9:8) B) A source of thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 9:11,12) C) Causing others to glorify God (2 Corinthians 9:13) D) Stimulating others to pray (2 Corinthians 9:14)

Giving is simply a reflection of your heart. It reveals:
Your love of God vs. love of the world Whose kingdom you are seeking Your level of trust & dependence on God You sensitivity & obedience to the prompting of the Holy Spirit? You will never handle anything less significant than money – nor more revealing of your heart

Malachi 3:8-10 This was written to the nation of Israel Christians are to keep the law of Christ and His commandments (Gal. 6:2; Matt. 28:20; etc.), not Moses

Levite’s tithe: Lev. 27:30-32; Num. 18:21-24 Festival tithe: Deut. 12:6-18; 14:27-28 Additional giving / taxes: * Various sacrifices – (Lev. 7) * Leaving the gleanings - (Lev. 19) * Land Sabbatical - Exod. 23) * Temple tax – Num. 10:3314:27-28 King’s tithe - 1 Samuel 8:15-17

Preachers teaching tithing because: Traditions of their church They see themselves as replacing Israel They want to increase income through guilt / obligation / greed

Some people believe they can either buy off God or purchase His blessings for 10% of their income. This reasoning is seen when people argue over whether the tithe is of their gross or net income

Genesis 14 – Abraham & Melchizedek Geneses 29 – Jacob & the Lord Both gave 10% by their own choice It is not a matter of how much you give, but of your heart in the giving.

Matthew 6:2 – giving practice of hypocrites The poor widow put in two mites - vs. 42 Jesus commended her - vs. 43, 44 It is not the amount, but the attitude of the heart.

Do you love God or the things of this world? Are you seeking God’s kingdom or your own? Have you learned to trust God for your future? Are you sensitive & obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit? You will never handle anything less significant than money – nor more revealing of your heart

Giving to the Lord’s work is more than just giving to GBC Missionaries Helping those in need (1 John 3:17-18) You may currently need to dig out of a financial mess – Next week: How to get your finances in order according to Biblical priorities
