Lived in log houses called “quarters”
Were issued clothes twice a year and one pair of shoes a year

Consisted of corn, molasses, and occasionally meat
Some slaves were allowed to have gardens and to hunt and fish

House servants worked directly for the planter’s family as cooks, maids, and butlers
Yard servants were skilled workers such as carpenters and blacksmiths

under the supervision of a white overseer
classified once a year by the amount of work they could do
very young and very old were called quarter hands
boys, girls, and mothers with young children were called half hands
full hands did a full day’s work

8. Gang System usually worked on cotton plantations
slaves did field work from sun up to sun down

9. Task System used by rice plantations each slave was given a daily task
when the task was done, the hand could work the rest of the day in his garden or fish

rewards consisted of cash or gifts
slaves who resisted were whipped, imprisoned, or given more work

owners and slaves often worked side by side
