BEd (Hons) Primary Teaching With recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status

2 So… you want to be a teacher?
Explain your reasons for becoming a teacher and ask the potential applicants to discuss with those around them,. Ask for feedback on what your partner said – this is what you might do in school. We are modelling a process.

7 What will I study? On the BEd Primary Education course you will enhance your knowledge of all National Curriculum subjects plus RE The course is underpinned by a ‘developing professional practice’ course where the emphasis is about how children learn and the skills required to be a good teacher You will undertake school-based training in each year of the course. Currently students spend a minimum of 24 weeks in school At the end of the course, you will be qualified to teach the 3 – 11 year age range

You will: be allocated schools within our partnership area have assessed placements every year have opportunities for enrichment and extension (non-assessed) develop your personal and professional learning in a supportive environment Elaborate on the process and what they will get from it. Incremental time in school

9 Your time in school What are you most looking forward to in school? What do you think you do well? What reservations might you have? Drawing out their initial views and reassuring them that we will draw out these reservations before they go into school in order for them to feel comfortable. It’s alright to feel anxious or concerned

10 Applications Apply through UCAS (open now)
On application for BEd Primary teaching, register to take the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy Practice tests are available Take and pass them to meet this entry requirement Google ‘Professional Skills Tests’ Go through the process – there are also skills test support sessions

11 Entry requirements GCSE English language, mathematics and science
Prior to Grade C or above (no equivalencies accepted) From Grade 4 or above 112 UCAS points At least 5 days school observation experience in a state primary school to complete set tasks (available from Pass Professional Skills tests in literacy and numeracy All suitable applicants are interviewed. Entry is also subject to completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) barred list and criminal records check; a Declaration of Disqualification by Association; and required to respond to targeted and relevant health questions (NCTL )

15 When you join us Ask them why we have chosen this image as a representation of starting out at university. As Maths and English are the core subjects we are going to give you a little example. It’s about talking, sharing, thinking creatively anddivergently. Getting away from seeing learning as more than just answering questions

18 What does English look like in the School of Education?
We will talk to you about subject knowledge and the importance of children’s literature. Of course it is not enough to know children’s books – it is what we do with our knowledge and understanding

19 Activity The Wuggen and the Tor Onz upon a pime a wuggen zonked into the grabbet. Ze was grolling for poft because ze was blongby. The wuggen grolled and grolled until ze motte a tor. Ze blind to the tor, ‘Ik am blongby and grollingfor poft. Do yum noff rem ik can gine some poft?’ ‘Kex’ glind ze tor, ‘klom with ne,wuggen. Ik have lodz of poft in ni bove.’ To get a feel of how children read a text. Ask these questions : Where did the wuggen zonk? What was she/he grolling for? Why was s/he grolling for poft? Who did s/he meet?
