1 Cell Organelles

2 Where are we Looking? Surface Cytoplasm Nucleus

3 Surface Cell Wall Cell Membrane

4 Cell Wall Found mostly in plant cells
Provides support and protection for the cell Extracellular structure that surrounds the cell membrane Allows substances (water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.) to pass into and out of cell. Made from carbohydrates and proteins made by cell.

5 Cell Wall

6 Cell Membrane - AKA plasma membrane - Outer membrane of the cell
- Allows substances into and out of the cell - Contains proteins (allows for passage of materials) - Proteins are surrounded by a phospholipid bi-layer (lipid bilayer)

7 Cell Membrane

8 Cytosplasm Centrioles Chloroplasts Cytoskeleton Endoplasmic Reticulum
Golgi Lysosome Mitochondria Ribosomes Vacuoles

9 Centrioles Cylindrical organelles that are near the nucleus in pairs
- Involved in cellular division

10 Chloroplasts Found in plant cells -Contain green chlorophyll
-Where photosynthesis takes place

11 Cytoskeleton Supports cell and provides shape
Aids in movement of materials into and out of cell.

12 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Tubular network fused to nuclear membrane Is located from membrane, throughout the cytoplasm. Serves as cell’s transport system 2 types: smooth ER and rough ER Smooth- lacks ribosomes Rough – contains ribosomes

13 Endoplasmic Reticulum

14 Golgi Protein “packaging plant” Found near nucleus
Composed of layers forming a sac

15 Lysosome Transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal
If lysosome breaks down, cell explodes

16 Mitochondria Powerhouse of cell Generate ATP
Double layered folded membrane Controls level of water in cell Forms urea

17 Ribosomes Protein Factories Embedded in Rough ER

18 Vacuoles Membrane bound sacs for digestion, storage, and waste removal
Contains water solution Contractile vacuoles for water removal

19 Nucleus Nuclear Envelope Nucleolus Chromosomes

20 Nuclear Envelope Surrounds nucleus Contains 2 layers
Contains pores to allow materials into and out of nucleus

21 Nucleolus Contains RNA for protein synthesis

22 Chromosomes Usually in the form of chromatin
Contains genetic information Composed of DNA Set number for each species
