“The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse
“The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?” OUR MOTTO: We WILL leave a verse! Our Credo: Class of 2021: Leading Innovation in the 21st Century: We will do no evil. We think different and imagine the possibilities. When we work together, we fly higher. We are class of 2021. We WILL contribute a verse!

100% of scientists will score 80% or higher on end of year PASS test.
I BELIEVE: -100% of scientists will have the qualities needed to succeed at anything you set out to do in life. -100% of scientists will accomplish your goals if you use asset-based thinking, persevere when problems arise, work as a team, and be leaders! -100% of you are outstanding scholars who can go to and through college. OUR BIG GOAL: 100% of scientists will score 80% or higher on end of year PASS test.

Objective Given an overview of the atmosphere TSWBAT compare the composition and structure of Earth’s atmospheric layers Standard: 6-4.1
4
What is the atmosphere? A blanket of air wrapped around the earth.
It is a layer of gases that surrounds the planet and makes the earth suitable for living things. Divided into 5 layers. These 5 layers are separated by the changes in temperature.
5
Imagine traveling in a glass elevator through the layers of the Atmosphere. What is the first thing you see?
11
The 5 Layers of the ATMOSPHERE
5. Exosphere 4. Thermosphere 3. Mesosphere 2. Stratosphere 1.Troposphere
12
5 Layers of the atmosphere
5. EXOSPHERE exo=external The outermost layer of the atmosphere Satellites are orbiting here! Coldest regions of outer space 4. THERMOSPHERE thermo=heat The 4th layer Auroras happen here! - Thin, warmer air is located here. Warmest layer of the atmosphere, even though you would still be cold if you went here 3. MESOSPHERE meso=middle This is the 3rd and middle layer. Radio waves are here! Coldest layer This is where shooting stars and meteoroids burn up. 2. STRATOSPHERE strato=divide -The 2nd layer. _ Boeing jets fly here! -as altitude increases , the temperature increases -Mostly cold, accept for in the upper regions (where the ozone is) -This is where Earth’s ozone layer is located 1. TROPOSPHERE -1st layer, and is closest to Earth. -where all weather occurs -as altitude increases , the temperature decreases
13
Exit Tickets: What is the middle layer of the atmosphere? Stratosphere Mesosphere Troposphere Exosphere 2. Which layer of the atmosphere is considered to be the warmest? Thermosphere 3. Which layer protects you? Why? 4. Name the layers of the atmosphere from closest to earth to furthest from earth:
14
Atmospheric Gases 2 most common gases of the atmosphere are nitrogen and oxygen. These gases are found throughout all the layers.
15
Water Vapor and Carbon dioxide
Atmospheric Gases Description Nitrogen and Oxygen The two most common gases; found throughout all layers Ozone A form of oxygen found in the stratosphere Water Vapor and Carbon dioxide Important gases for weather conditions; found in troposphere Trace gases Minor gases that are not important
16
Air pressure is the force caused by the weight of all the atmospheric gases pressing down on Earth.
Air pressure decreases the farther out from the surface as Earth’s pull of gravity decreases. There are fewer molecules of air as you go away from the Earth, so air pressure is thin.
17
Bell Ringer: List the layers of the atmosphere (IN ORDER) The atmosphere is made up of many different types of _____________. *REMEMBER TO DO THIS IN YOUR BELL RINGER COMPOSITION NOTEBOOK!!!
18
Review Questions: 1. The lowest of the Earth’s atmospheric layers is the _______. 2. Where is the ozone layer located? 3. The weather occurs in the ___________ layer. 4. Which layer is thin and hot? 5. The cold regions of outer space extend from the __________. 6. We live in the _________________ layer. 7. Shooting star and meteoroids are located in the __________.
