Chapter 15 Holden plans a date with an old girlfriend, Sally Hayes, to keep him busy for the day. While eating breakfast two nuns with a collection basket sit next to him which he makes conversation with. One of the nuns claims to be an English teacher. They being to discuss Romeo and Juliet. Holden dislikes the theater almost as much as movies. Both are contrived and, artificial, the audiences applaud for the wrong reason, as they did at Ernie’s. Holden dislikes Romeo but is a fan of Mercutio. He donates $10 to the nuns but wishes he would have donated a bit more. However, he is running low on money and he has a date with sally, who we suspect might not be of low- maintenance

Chapter 16 He keeps thinking about the collection basket the nuns were carrying and imagines different people he knows having to hold it. Holden has two hours until he needs to meet sally so he goes down Broadway in look for a record for his sister called “little Shirley beans” about a kid missing two front teeth and is embarrassed to leave her house. Holden was amused by a family walking in front of him that were not paying attention to their kid. The kid carelessly walks on the street, singing, as cars swerved around him. Which made Holden feel better and not as depressed. Walking down Broadway Holden is annoyed by the fact that so any people are actually interested in going to shows. He calls jane, but hangs up because her mother answers. Holden goes into a digression of how much he dislikes shows, movies and actors. He arrives to the park where he believes phoebe his sister might be. He does not find phoebe and walks to the museum of national history where he remembers going himself as a kid. However, once he arrives he does not go in. “the best thing, though, in the museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody moved”.

Chapter 17 As Holden waits for sally he watches the girls that are waiting for their dates and starts to wonder what kind of partners they’ll end up with, if they end up with anyone at all. Sally shows up “looking terrific” that he could marry her, even though he doesn’t actually like her. They go to watch a show and after the first act they step outside to smoke where all the “phonies” and ”jerks” go to talk about the show. Sally knows one of those “jerks” who’s name is George and spends a good time talking to him. Which annoyed Holden. Once the show was over and they’re in the cab Holden is basically over Sally’s company, when she suggests they should go ice skating. They are both not too good ice skaters so they decide to sit and have a drink instead. Sally wants to know again if Holden will be over to trim the Christmas tree, he says yes, but changes the subject. Holden begins to vent to sally on why he hates life. Sally constantly has to ask Holden to lower his voice. Finally Holden tells sally to runaway with him but sally refuses and tells him they cant because they’re still children. Holden calls sally a pain in the ass.
