Scheme of Redemption
2
Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet
3
Main concepts of our study
"Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin
4
Main concepts of our study
Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt Exodus – Two Month Journey to Sinai
5
Recap Discussed the crossing of the Red Sea
Discussed the importance of not losing faith in God, even when things seem hopeless Discussed how God can and will handle the problems in our lives, often times without any work on our behalf
6
Israel provoked God Psalms 106:6-7 – We have sinned like our fathers, We have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly. Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; They did not remember Your abundant kindnesses, But rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea What can we learn from this when we give in to fear and doubt and let it dominate our trust in God?
7
God still provides Psalms 106: Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, That He might make His power known. Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, And He led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness. So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. The waters covered their adversaries; Not one of them was left. Then they believed His words; They sang His praise (Ex 15 – Song of Moses)
8
Israel forgets Psalms 106:13-15 – They quickly forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel, But craved intensely in the wilderness, And tempted God in the desert. So He gave them their request, But sent a wasting disease among them (Numbers 15)
9
Israel forgets Exodus 15:22-25 – Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore it was named Marah. So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet.
10
Israel forgets Imagine:
You’re living in the wilderness You have no running water. You have to drink from natural water sources (rivers, creeks, streams, lakes, ponds, ) All your water is gone, and the natural water sources are not drinkable What do you do?? Do we have times like this in life, where our well-being is threatened? How should we respond?
11
God is the healer Exodus 15:25-27 – There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them. And He said, “If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the Lord, am your healer.” Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.
12
Israel continues to complain
Exodus 16:1-3 – Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

14
God provides food Ex 16:4-7 - Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, “At evening you will know that the Lord has brought you out of the land of Egypt; and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, for He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and what are we, that you grumble against us?”
15
God provides food for Israel
Exodus 16:8-21 – God provides bread and meat, through manna and quail 16:31 – Manna was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey 16:35 – Israel ate it for 40 years until they entered in Canaan
16
The secret to contentment
Philippians 4:10-13 – But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me
17
The secret to contentment
Exodus 17:1-3 – Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water that we may drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, "Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?"
18
Israel questions God Once again, Israel is preferring to be back in the harsh conditions of slavery in Egypt This time, they are quarreling with Moses and testing God God instructs Moses to strike the rock at Horeb, and water will come out Moses does so, and the people drink Moses named the place Massah because Israel tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”
19
Reminders from the Psalmist
Psalms 78:12-16 – He wrought wonders before their fathers In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap. Then He led them with the cloud by day And all the night with a light of fire. He split the rocks in the wilderness And gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths. He brought forth streams also from the rock And caused waters to run down like rivers
20
Reminders from the Psalmist
Psalms 78:17-20 – Yet they still continued to sin against Him, To rebel against the Most High in the desert. And in their heart they put God to the test By asking food according to their desire. Then they spoke against God; They said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? "Behold, He struck the rock so that waters gushed out, And streams were overflowing; Can He give bread also? Will He provide meat for His people?"
21
Reminders from the Psalmist
Psalms 78:21-22 – Therefore the Lord heard and was full of wrath; And a fire was kindled against Jacob And anger also mounted against Israel, Because they did not believe in God And did not trust in His salvation.
22
Reminders from the Psalmist
Psalms 78:40-42 – How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness And grieved Him in the desert! Again and again they tempted God, And pained the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember His power, The day when He redeemed them from the adversary
23
Are we any different today?
So often we rail against the Israelites. We read of their rebellion, their griping, and complaining. But are we any different? Israel was wandering in the wilderness, living in tents, and eating some flaky stuff off the ground for a solid 40 years! We have it infinitely better than they did at this time, yet so often it seems we behave just the same as they did.
24
Are we any different today?
What are some ways in which we doubt, fear, and test God like the Israelites did? When our health fails When our jobs become shaky When the unexpected occurs When we have an insane election facing us?? It so often seems that we believe that God CAN do the things of the Bible, and CAN fulfill the Words He has stated. The problem seems to be that we don’t believe that He WILL do these things for us. Why is that??
25
Are we any different today?
How do you think the Lord feels when we doubt Him and don’t FULLY put our trust in Him? It may be high time that we repent of our doubts and fears and stake a claim in Moses’ Words to Israel at the Red Sea: “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today; The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”
26
Reminders from the Psalmist
Psalms 106:44-48 – Nevertheless He looked upon their distress When He heard their cry; And He remembered His covenant for their sake, And relented according to the greatness of His lovingkindness. He also made them objects of compassion In the presence of all their captors. Save us, O Lord our God, And gather us from among the nations, To give thanks to Your holy name And glory in Your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, “Amen.” Praise the Lord!
