1 Presentation to CARL November 8, 2017

2 What are the core components of the DRI ecosystem?

3 What was our mandate from ISED?
LCDRI was funded to work through a community-based process to develop three position papers on: Data Management (DM) Advanced Research Computing (ARC) Future Coordination of the National Layer of the DRI Ecosystem

4 What is the status of our work?
Position papers on DM and ARC were submitted at the end of August Draft position paper on the future coordination of the national layer of the DRI ecosystem is circulating for review by LCDRI community and due at the end of November ISED has indicated that they view the papers as the beginning of a conversation – not the end ISED has asked for clarification on a number of areas of the reports and the Working Groups are currently working to develop responses to their questions

5 What is the connection of our work to Budget 2018?
ISED has indicated that they are targeting this upcoming budget for a possible signal on DRI Know that new digital technologies and explosive rates of data collection are creating unprecedented potential for scientific breakthrough and that tapping this opportunity will require having strong DRI foundations in place Also appreciate that this will create a significant indirect cost pressure for institutions Taking DRI seriously and view it as distinct, but synergistic to the asks outlined in the Naylor report

6 How was the ARC paper created and what does it cover?
Significant effort and contribution from Working Group members Report submitted at the end of August Outlines why ARC is important, its current strengths and challenges, our vision, principles, and goals Proposes three options for funding the national/regional layer of ARC Begins to clarify potential roles and responsibilities among local, regional/provincial, national layers

7 How was the DM paper created and what does it cover?
Significant effort and contribution from Working Group members Report submitted at the end of August Outlines why RDM is important, its current strengths and challenges, our vision, principles, and goals Proposes creation of a new, pan-Canadian organization, Research Data Management Canada, that would coordinate and facilitate RDM activity in Canada Also addresses Research Management Information (RMI)

8 How was the draft coordination paper created and what does it cover?
Development overseen by LCDRI Executive Committee Report due at the end of November Informed by a report by TBG MacNiven that undertook an international environmental scan, literature review, and interviews with LCDRI stakeholders TBG MacNiven emphasized the applicability of collaborative governance models and proposed three potential models – the Executive favoured a transfer payment, non-profit corporation Building on TBG MacNiven report, the Executive Committee developed three new options for improving DRI ecosystem coordination in Canada to share with the DRI community
