Sketch/write # 31: Read the article “Photoshop vs. Illustrator, Raster vs. Vector” on the website. What are raster (bitmap) images? Write the definition. What program uses rasters? What are examples of things you can do with raster images? List the benefits of raster imagery in bullet points. List the weaknesses of raster imagery. What are vector images? Write the definition. What program uses vectors? List examples of artwork you can make with vectors. List the benefits of Vector imagery. List the weaknesses of vectors.

Vector vs. Bitmap/Pixel Art
Key Points About Vector Images Scalable Resolution independent No background Cartoon-like Inappropriate for photo-realistic images Become bitmap images (not scalable) once rasterized Illustrator is a popular vector drawing program AI (Adobe Illustrator) is a common vector format Key Points About Pixel (aka Bitmap aka Raster) Images Not scalable without loss of resolution Fixed resolution of pixels on a grid Confined to a rectangular background Good for photorealistic images, mimicking painting Photoshop is a popular bitmap editing program PSD, JPEG, JPG, GIF are common bitmap formats

Why Vector Art? 2D graphic imaging software falls into two basic categories Image editing software (Bitmap Art) Illustration software (Vector Art) Vector illustrations, because they consist of a mathematical equation of points and objects rather than pixels on a grid, are free from the confines of pixel resolution. Unlike bitmapped images, they will always print at the highest resolution possible, giving you printed output with smooth fills and crisp lines no matter what size you print it. However, vector graphics generally cannot contain the high level of detail as bitmapped images so they often have a cartoon-like appearance. Illustration software is most often used to create stylized, cartoon-like images, logos, maps, and other design elements that need to be output at any size.

Adobe Illustrator Assignment #1: Abstract Shape Composition.
Name this: yourname_abstract.ai and save in your student home. All practice assignments will be turned in later. Create an abstract composition using shapes, lines, and color: Use the basic shape tools, line tools, curve and spiral tools, fill and stroke, pencil tools, effects tools Use a color scheme: analagous, complementary, or monochromatic. Include shades and tints. Vary your color fill, stroke color, and stroke weight. Manipulate shapes using the direct select tool (white arrow)
