Positive and Normative Statements
This resource is based on an interactive activity format we call 'Swipe it'. The activity takes the look of a tablet on screen and pupils are presented with a scenario that will affect the price of ivory on global markets. As part of a class discussion or as an individual test, the teacher asks whether the pupils think that the scenario given will cause the price of ivory to RISE or to FALL. The pupils will use a button to 'swipe' left if they think the price of ivory will rise and ‘swipe’ right if they think the price of ivory will fall. There are 10 scenarios, and at any point throughout the exercise the teacher can review the answers given by the pupils. Positive and Normative Statements Whenever you are reading articles on current affairs it is important to be able to distinguish between objective and subjective statements. Positive statements are objective statements that can be tested, amended or rejected by referring to the available evidence. Positive economics deals with objective explanation and the testing and rejection of theories. A value judgement is a subjective statement of opinion rather than a fact that can be tested by looking at the available evidence Normative statements are subjective statements – i.e. they carry value judgments.
