They measure success by the number of medals, cups and leagues they win. They see only a small picture of what is possible and want success quickly. Mastery coaches – take a longer-term view and want to see individual development, achieve their personal best, work with others to learn, fun and enjoyment, see mistakes as a learning opportunity, focus is on competing, learning and improving. They are patient and concentrate on long term development. It is likely that you have attributes of each type when you coach. A mastery environment is one in which personal accomplishment is emphasised through the way a session is structured. Young athletes are encouraged to develop their personal ability rather than being compared to others and their success is measured by their own personal accomplishment. Each young person works at his or her own level, accomplishing tasks and reaching goals that are unique to their own situation. This environment provides the opportunity for all individuals to experience success and develop their skills, regardless of their ability level – providing an opportunity for young people to enjoy sport, perform to the best of their ability and learn important lessons. WHAT TYPE OF COACH ARE YOU? Rate this tool! Give us your feedback.
