Introduction Pen and ink has been used for illustration and pre-press work because it is black and white. This black and white quality allows images created in this medium to be easily reproduced by a printing press. The subtle grays in a pencil drawing are not easy to reproduce with out a halftone screen. If you magnify newsprint you will see the dots. They look a lot like stipple. Stipple Examples Pen and ink is a graphic art – there are no grays, only black and white. Any illusion of gray areas is created by adding more texture, and highlights are created by leaving the white of the paper showing. Copy the examples on the left to improve your stippling technique.
