The Mayflower and Plymouth Colony
New England settlers true goal was spiritual - Pilgrims = Separatists (break from Church of England) destination Virginia got lost end up at Plymouth 1620 Mayflower Compact of 1620 = plan for gov’t drafted aboard ship - self-rule based on majority of townsmen - led to town meetings and elected legislature

First Thanksgiving arrived Nov., too late to plant crops - 44 of 102 original passengers died neighboring NAs and Pilgrims form alliance - Pilgrims help defend against neighboring tribes - NAs educate on crops and farming techniques 1621: joint celebration

Mass. Bay -- “The City Upon a Hill”
1630: Puritans (purify Church of Engl in eyes of God) governor John Winthrop’s purpose: “city upon a hill…model of Christian charity” women did not participate in town meetings or church decisions mandatory church attendance harsh punishment for “straying from God” - hangings - whippings - stocks capital city Boston

Dissent in Mass. Bay Anne Hutchison preached her understanding of Bible - gained followers - leadership role as a woman - tried and found guilty by Puritans banished from Mass. Bay Roger Williams: 1) separation of church and state = religious freedom 2) NAs should be paid for land - banished by Puritans - founded city of Providence in colony of Rhode Island (bought land from NAs) - attracted other dissenters
