1 Fashion Merchandising
4.4 Technology in Fashion

2 4.4 Technology in Fashion Goal: Explain ways technology is used in fashion marketing. New Vocabulary: CAD CAM CID RFID EPR Bar Code …more

3 4.4 Technology in Fashion APK—Technology is used everywhere! Think of one disadvantage of technology: Possible answers: Expensive Creates huge amounts of data to be managed. Possible power failure or computer “downtime”. Human error Consumer privacy

4 4.4 Technology in Fashion CAD—Computer Aided Design, is a computer system used for designing textiles, apparel, and other products. CAM—Computer Aided Manufacturing, a computer controlled production. Both of these have dramatically advanced the fashion industry.

5 4.4 Technology in Fashion CIM—Computer Integrated Manufacturing, is the technological production process that combines the two systems of CAD and CAM. CIM has improved the quality of goods produced and has lowered production costs.

6 4.4 Technology in Fashion Bar Codes—are product codes with dark bars and white spaces of varying widths, used on merchandise tags or other labels, for electronic data collection. UPC—Universal Product Code, is the most familiar bar code used in retail.

7 4.4 Technology in Fashion Optical Scanner—electronic reader that uses a laser to decipher bar codes and carries the information to a computer for marketing and inventory. These may be built into the check out counter, hand-held wands, or laser readers.

8 4.4 Technology in Fashion EPR—Enterprise Resource Planning, this system extracts data from the sales transactions in the retail store and enables the retailer to reorder merchandise on a timely basis. For example, a cash register scanner records the sale of the last size 15, blue, pin-striped shirt in stock. It can automatically place an order; then the factory can make another shirt in a few minutes and ship it to the store by the end of the day.

9 4.4 Technology in Fashion Inventory—the supply of goods to be sold.
Inventory Control Systems—the process used to track the buying and storing of products for sale as well as costs for ordering, shipping, handling, and storage. Each company uses their own specific inventory software programs to track inventory.

10 4.4 Technology in Fashion RFID—Radio Frequency Identification Systems, a system that tags pallets and cases for automatic processing of merchandise shipments. It helps the retailer identify, track, and manage large quantities of goods as they move through the supply chain. Merchandise can be tracked to its exact location. Companies can then reduce warehousing costs.

11 4.4 Technology in Fashion Internet Web Sites—sites used for customer ordering or merchandise. As web sites became shopping resources, retailers had to develop software that could respond to customer orders, track inventory, allow for check out, and satisfy customers demands. Web sites are a good way to support in-store sales as well.

12 4.4 Technology in Fashion Magnetic Stripes—are common along the top or bottom or the back or credit, debit, and gift cards. When the stripes are run through reading devices, information contained in the stripes is translated.

13 4.4 Technology in Fashion Smart Cards—have a small microprocessor embedded in the plastic, similar to RFID labels. The microprocessor provides user identification, information, or stored cash credits that can be used for purchases.
