2 Also known as… REALISM: the characters and situations presented in the literature are REAL; they have flaws, they can be corrupt, there is disappointment, etc. DARK ROMANTICISM: this fiction focuses on the darkness of the human soul and accepts that there was sin and evil in the world

3 Anti-Transcendentalist Beliefs
Man is born with the stain of the original sin (man is born essentially bad) Man is the most destructive force in nature One can only find God through good works and life experience There are no universal truths, just individual truths There is no Oversoul idea-just Heaven and Hell.

6 More Clarification… Anti-Transcendentalism: focused on the limitations and potential destructiveness of the human spirit rather than on its possibilities. Realism: The Realists sough to depict real life as faithfully and accurately as possible. Generally, the Realist presented everyday realities. The writings focused on the ordinary lives of people and characters in the lower and middle-class. How do these attitudes contrast TRANSCENDENTALISM?
