1 Poems, Drama, and Fiction
By Chase Guthrie and Brendan Meckler

2 What are poems? Poems are a type of literature that use rhythmic aspects to portray emotion. There are many types of poems, including sonnets which have 14 lines, Shakespearean Sonnets which are similar to regular sonnets, but are made of three quatrains and a couplet, and the famous Italian sonnets which are made up from an octave and a sestet.

3 Aspects of Poetry With all of the different types of poetry, there naturally are different aspects to poetry. Repetition is when a sound, word, or phrase is repeated many times over. Rhyme scheme is used in every poem with more than one line. Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme in poems. Couplets have a rhyme scheme of “ aa”. Shakespearean sonnets use a rhyme scheme of “abab cdcd efef gg”. Alliteration is another aspect of poetry. It is when a consonant sound is repeated many times over. Tongue Twisters are a great example of alliteration.

4 Aspects of Poetry Continued
Something found in every poem is assonance and consonance. Assonance is when a vowel sound is repeated over and over. Consonance is the same thing but with consonants. Onomatopoeia are words that sound like they mean. The ship has sailed to the far off shores. Go and mow the lawn. Zoom. Whoosh. Woof.

5 External Rhyme VS Internal Rhyme VS End Rhymes
External Rhymes is the repetition of ending vowel and consonant sounds I do not like green eggs and ham/I do not like them, Sam I am. Internal Rhymes are rhymes that occur in between phrases (in the middle of the line) I see a red boat that has a red flag. / Just like my red coat and my little red pail. End Rhymes are rhymes that occur at the end of lines. Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night

6 What is drama? A drama is defined as an exciting, emotional, or unexpected series of events or set of circumstances. Drama is a play that can be presented in a theatre, on the radio, or on the television. A play is made up of acts which are made of scenes to divide the play. Drama uses a mixture of many different tools to make it a very effective representation of literature such as stage directions, dialogue, foil characters, tragic heroes and many more. One of the most prominent uses of drama in history is the literature of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was one of the first to effectively use the different aspects of drama and has become arguably the best playwright in history.

7 What is fiction? Fiction is defined as something invented by the imagination of someone or simply not real. Fiction is very prominent in literature. So prominent that there are different variations of fiction, many of which we have read in class. There is probably the most popular form of fiction in modern literature, science fiction where the author uses futuristic and scientific elements to drive the plot. An example of science fiction that we have read in class is the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. There is also realistic fiction where the story is fake but uses realistic elements. An example of the is “The Interlopers” by Saki.
