5 KENAS Establishment Started in the year 1984 with accreditation of Calibration Laboratories under the National Calibration Service (NCS) at KEBS under L.N. 80/84. In 1987, the first lab was registered under the NCS In 1995 registration of Assessors for Quality Management system started under L.N. 90/95. A cabinet memorandum for establishment of a National Accreditation Body by the Ministry of Trade was signed in the year 2004 leading to the establishment of an accreditation department at KEBS in June 2004.

False start in March 2005 through establishment of the Accreditation Body under the Standards Act. The first accreditation decision taken by the accreditation department happened in 2007 for a calibration lab that was under the NCS In May 2009 the Kenya Accreditation Service was formally established under L.N. 55 of 2009. Currently the accreditation Bill 2013 has been forwarded to Parliament.

EAC Engagement Accreditation within the EAC are under the EAC SQMT Act of 2006. KENAS is the only established accreditation body within the EAC

9 KENAS Mandate Develop, regulate & review the criteria & requirements for accreditation. Open, maintain & update the register of accredited CAB’s. Publish in the Kenya Gazette all CAB’s that have been accredited within a particular year. Promote use of accreditation mark(s) & certificates issued to accredited CAB’s Promote competence &equivalence of results of accredited bodies. Establish & nurture relations and co-operation with regional &international accreditation bodies Promote accreditation as a means of facilitating regional & international trade. Raise awareness on the importance & purpose of accreditation.

13 Testing & Calibration Testing & Calibration laboratories ISO/IEC 17025:2005 This include testing laboratories in water, industry, pesticide and aflatoxin testing. Calibration laboratories are in the fields of temperature, mass, pressure, torque and industrial measurements.

21 China’s ‘One Belt And One Road Initiative’?
“One Belt, One Road,” or the Maritime Silk Road as it is more commonly known, will connect China via rail and shipping links with major markets in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa In 13 May 2017, President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Beijing to attend a major summit on infrastructure and held bilateral talks with Chinese leaders on trade and development with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang on Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative. That visit resulted in financing for the first phase of the Standard Gauge Railway from Mombasa to Nairobi, the first three berths at Lamu Port, and upgrading of major roads including the Nairobi northern, southern and eastern bypasses, Africa Economic Zone in Eldoret

22 China’s ‘One Belt And One Road Initiative’?
The Kenya Government has not yet developed a policy on the one belt and one road initiative. The process for establishment of the same is yet to be formally started.

There is currently a drive by the market for accreditation especially calibration laboratories especially in the field of temperature, mass, pressure, torque and industrial measurements.

KS 372 Inspection by accredited inspection on passenger bus body construction Energy Act 2016 all imported energy appliances to be tested by accredited testing laboratory. Kenya power has a regulation that their suppliers of electrical components shall be tested by accredited laboratory. GlobalGap any testing in the farms must be done by an accredited laboratory
