2 Understanding Telecommuting
Telecommuting also referred to as a flexible work arrangement (FWA) allows managers and employees to think more strategically about when and how work gets done and when properly implemented telecommuting assists in achieving work life balance while increasing job satisfaction and meeting company goals. Telecommuting arrangements should be: Strategic – links to the organization’s vision and direction, responsive to its needs (including the nature of the business and its operating hours) and the demands of the customers Integrated into business planning and documented Values based – involves fair and transparent decision-making, as well as a supportive culture Shared responsibility between employees and management Responsive to changing needs of employees and the organization Inclusive – creates an environment that supports and engages all employees Evaluated – ensures measurable outcomes and benefits are achieved Work Resources: Employee Online Intranet

Three levels of responsibility (for leaders, people managers, and individual contributors), and four elements of implementing telecommuting/FWAs (setting direction, culture, action, and review).
