What is the size of Chinese-speaking population? How many Chinese spoken languages are there? How many Chinese written languages are there? What is Modern Standard Chinese pronunciation system based on? How does it compare to English? What is the fundamental difference between Chinese characters and English words? Why is the stroke order in Chinese writing is important? What expressions would help you in our classroom? What expressions or phrases would help you to survive in a Chinese-speaking environment?

14 Modern Standard Chinese Pinyin
A Chinese character has only one syllable which consists of two parts: an initial (consonant) and a final (vowel). 15 Finals (vowels) Two types of finals in the Chinese phonetic alphabet - single finals and compound finals. A final usually follows an initial in a syllable. (IC p.1) Simple Finals a o e i u ü

represented pinyin by marks above the finals, read from left to right. The absence of a tone means a neutral tone. Stroke number helps to find the character in a radical-based dictionary Write numerals in the air while reading out stroke names - IC p.17 Try pronouns and your names at home Basic Chinese Radicals - IC p.12~14 Read, write, and memorize 10 a day if possible. Build a strong foundation! It helps when look up dictionary and taking a test Etmology Strokes -> radicals -> components -> characters -> CC -> phrases Traditional writing system has 214 radicals and 1100 phonetics while simplified Chinese has 189 radicals Read Newspaper - by teams Circle words that you know, mark Radicals in the known words
