EXAM FORMAT From 2016, the IGCSE Geography examination will be presented in a new format. Candidates will sit 3 papers. This has not changed. These papers are Paper 1; Paper 2 and Paper 4.

PAPER 1 This paper is now called Paper 1 Geographical Themes. Previously it was simply Paper 1. The paper is 1 hour and 45 minutes long. This has not changed. Candidates answer three questions from six, each worth 25 marks. This will give a total of 75 marks This has not changed. This paper is worth 45% of your final mark. This has not changed.

PAPER 1 The paper now has three sections and each section will be based on Themes 1, 2 or 3 as given in the syllabus. Candidates must answer one question from each section. This is the major change! Section A - Theme 1: Population and Settlement Section B - Theme 2: The Natural Environment Section C - Theme 3: Economic Development

PAPER 2 This paper is now called Paper 2 Geographical Skills. It was previously called Paper 2. The paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. This has not changed. Candidates answer all the questions (6). This has not changed Question 1 is worth 20 marks but will require the use of a 1: or 1: map with a key. This has not changed.

PAPER 2 Questions 2 to 6 are based on testing the interpretation and analysis of geographical information, decision making and the application of graphical and other techniques as appropriate. They do not require specific information about places. Each question is worth 8 marks. The paper is worth 60 marks – 27.5% of your final mark. All of the above have not changed.

PAPER 4 This paper is called Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework. This has not changed. The paper is 1 hour and 30 minutes long. There are 2 compulsory questions on the paper. Each question is worth 30 marks. The paper is worth 60 marks, representing 27.5% of your final mark.

PAPER 4 Candidates answer two compulsory questions, completing a series of written tasks. The field work scenarios for the two questions will be taken from different aspects of the Syllabus content. The questions involve an appreciation of a range of techniques used in fieldwork studies.
