Variable – a symbol for a number we don’t know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y x = 35 (x is the variable)
Represent – to take the place of (example: a variable represents an unknown number)

Repeated Addition: 2 x 4 = = 8
Array: 2 (rows) x 4 (in each row) xxxx = 8 xxxx
Groups of: 2 (groups) x 4 (in each group) = 8

5. Vocabulary Division Strategies:
Repeated Subtraction: 12 ÷ 4 = – 4 = 8 – 4 = 4 – 4 =
Equal Groups: 12 (split evenly between all groups) ÷ 4 (# of groups)
= 3 (# in each group)

Solve – to find an answer to, explanation for, or means for dealing with a problem.
Draw/Model – draw a picture/model that can represent the problem. (Example: an array or equal groups)
Distinguish – to tell the difference between two things
