1
I can solve multiplication and division word problems using drawings and equations with a variable.
4.M.OA.02
2
Vocabulary Equation – a math statement that says that two expressions have the same value (any number sentence with a equal sign) – 3 = 10 – = 4
3
Vocabulary Variable – a symbol for a number we don’t know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y x = 35 (x is the variable) Represent – to take the place of (example: a variable represents an unknown number)
4
Multiplication Strategies:
Vocabulary Multiplication Strategies: Repeated Addition: 2 x 4 = = 8 Array: 2 (rows) x 4 (in each row) xxxx = 8 xxxx Groups of: 2 (groups) x 4 (in each group) = 8
5
Vocabulary Division Strategies:
Repeated Subtraction: 12 ÷ 4 = – 4 = 8 – 4 = 4 – 4 = Equal Groups: 12 (split evenly between all groups) ÷ 4 (# of groups) = 3 (# in each group)
6
Vocabulary Solve – to find an answer to, explanation for, or means for dealing with a problem. Draw/Model – draw a picture/model that can represent the problem. (Example: an array or equal groups) Distinguish – to tell the difference between two things
7
Example Problem 1 A shirt costs $14. A jacket costs 7 times as much as a shirt. How much does the jacket cost?
8
Practice Problem 1 A pair of socks cost $4. A pair of shoes cost 11 times as much as the pair of socks. How much does the pair of shoes cost?
9
Example Problem 2 A jacket costs $75 and a shirt costs $15. How many times as much does the jacket costs as the shirt?
10
Practice Problem 2 A pair of shoes costs $52 and a pair of socks cost $4. How many times as much does the pair of shoes cost as the pair of socks?
11
Example Problem 3 Jamie got 28 gumballs and Lacey got 7 gumballs. How many times as much did Jamie get than Lacey?
12
Practice Problem 3 Hayden got 36 stickers and Avery got 6 stickers. How many times as much did Hayden get than Avery?
13
Practice Problem 4 A baseball costs $6. A baseball bat costs 7 times as much as the baseball bat. How much does the baseball bat cost?
14
Practice Problem 5 A Disneyland ticket costs $90 and a LA Zoo ticket costs $15. How many times as much does the Disneyland ticket costs than the LA Zoo ticket?
15
Practice Problem 6 Brandon drove 48 miles and Jeff drove 8 miles. How many times as much did Brandon drive than Jeff?
16
Make Your Own Problems Create 2 of your own word problems that are similar to the ones we have been solving. Trade your board with a neighbor and see if you can find the answer to one of their problems. Trade your board with another neighbor and see if you can solve their second problem.
17
Think Back… Tell your neighbor two different ways to solve a multiplication problem. Explain what a variable is to a different neighbor.
