2 Power Electronics Converters
 A power converter is an electrical or electro-mechanical device for converting electrical energy. It may be converting AC to or from DC, or the voltage or frequency, or some combination of these. Give a brief overview of the presentation. Describe the major focus of the presentation and why it is important. Introduce each of the major topics. 3 Types of Power Converters
It is broadly classified into six types such as Diode Rectifiers AC-DC Converters DC-DC Converters DC-AC Converters AC-AC Converters Static Switches Give a brief overview of the presentation. 4 Diode Rectifiers It converts AC input into fixed DC voltage
Input may be Single-phase/ Three-phase

5 AC-DC Converters It converts the constant AC voltage to variable DC output voltage. It mainly uses SCR’s. Applications: DC drives, metallurgical etc..

6 DC-DC Converters Also known as DC Choppers
It converts fixed DC i/p voltage into a controllable DC o/p voltage Applications: Subway cars, trolley trucks, DC drives

7 DC-AC Converters It converts fixed DC voltage to a variable AC voltage. O/p maybe a variable voltage/frequency. Applications: Speed control of induction motor, UPS, HVDC transmission

8 AC-AC Converters It converts fixed AC i/p voltage into variable AC o/p voltage They are of two types: AC regulators It converts fixed AC voltage directly to a variable AC voltage at the same frequency Applications: Speed control of fans and pumps

9 2) Cycloconverters: It converts i/p power at one frequency to o/p power at a different frequency through one stage conversion. Applications: In slow speed large AC drives like rotary kilns

10 Static Switches It possess many advantages over mechanical and electromechanical circuit breakers. Dependency upon the input supply, the switches are called AC static switches/ DC static switches.
