1.Turn in your worksheet on “The Lorax”.
Unit 2: Energy Conservation and Transfer Focus: Hydroelectric Energy Day 7: 11/27/17 1.Turn in your worksheet on “The Lorax”. 2.Pick up the “How Electricity is Made” worksheet and the Energy Study Guide. 3. Science starter: Copy this question: Sugar is added to water and the mixture is stirred. Which observation is evidence that the sugar dissolved in the water? *Less sugar is visible *The water is cloudy *The sugar turned into crystals *Bubbles formed in the water

Homework Worksheet “How Electricity is Made”.
Begin working on energy unit test study guide. Due next Tuesday. Energy Unit test next Tuesday.
5
Essential Questions – Copy on p. 37
What are the pro’s and con’s of hydroelectric energy and biomass energy?

Carrying Capacity… An example ‘cause it’s on the quiz
Carrying Capacity… An example ‘cause it’s on the quiz! The softball coach is wrapping ankles before the game. The tape will be enough to wrap the ankles of his team only. Fortunately, no players from the other team ask him to wrap their ankles. What is the carrying capacity situation in this example? How would you define carrying capacity?
7
Hydroelectric group…get ready to present.
8
Think about it…Can a fish climb a ladder?
9
Let’s hear from the hydroelectric group.
10
3. Hydro-Power Definition: moving (falling) water turns the blades of turbines operating electricity generators, and transforming the potential energy of water at the top of a waterfall into kinetic energy and then into electricity. Advantages: *Renewable and reliable-water cycle continually supplies water *Creates lakes and reservoirs to increase local water supply *Does not produce pollution or waste *No fuel costs and low maintenance costs once the dam is built *Very efficient-makes a lot of electricity Disadvantage: *Loss of fish and other aquatic animals and plants -damage ecosystems above and below the dam *Dams are expensive *Can flood existing farmland (drown forests; force towns to move) *Downstream, amount & quality of water may change
11
Let’s review hydroelectricity.
Hydroelectric dam/Canada
12
Let’s watch a Brainpop on Hydroelectricity.
Hydroelectricity Brainpop Video Listen for the following: *What are two ways dams can affect the quality of water below the dam? *What is a solution designed to help fish that must swim upstream to spawn?

Have your energy chart ready to add info about biomass
Have your energy chart ready to add info about biomass. Let’s go Biomass group.

9. Biofuel/Biomass Definition: Burning wood, paper, organic material, animal waste or even garbage to create heat to turn water to steam... turbines… generators. (need a fuel) Advantages: Renewable-we can continually grow plants/there will always be waste Less waste in landfills Carbon-neutral – CO2 is produced when plant material is burned/but other plants/trees are taking in CO2 from the air at the same time Emits less carbon when burned than fossil fuels Disadvantages: Gives off pollution, but not as bad as burning fossil fuels Releases some CO2 Biofuel crops use land that could be used for growing food Fossil fuels are used during planting, harvest, and transport of plant crops (tractors/other machinery/trucks) Is not as efficient as fossil fuels/takes a lot of biomass to generate significant amounts of electricity
16
Let’s watch a Brainpop video about biofuels/biomass energy.
Listen for the following: How do plants used for biofuel help with carbon in the air? What is the most common biofuel? ls/preview.weml
