In 1904, Hines began to take photos of immigrants arriving to Ellis Island. Hines asked the immigrants to stop and pose for the camera. Most times he uses gestures to communicate with the immigrants. He returned many times to Ellis Island, taking over 200 pictures. Next, Hine would take pictures of immigrant slums, and then child laborers. In 1908, he was hired to be an investigative photographer in the NCLC’s campaign to outlaw child labor. (p19) A typical day of an immigrant was very different in the early 1900s than today. Immigrants lived in 1 or 2 room apartments. Families worked 8am to 8pm, making $1.20. Every member of the family had to work. One family worked all day making artificial flowers. Overall, life was difficult for immigrants in America. CC B KEY IDEAS AND DETAILS (TEXT ANALYSIS)
