4.1 Early US Industrialization (11 Note Cards Required) SSUSH7 Students will explain the process of economic growth, its regional and national impact in the first half of the 19 century, and the different responses to it.

2 Industrial Revolution
A time during the late 18th and early 19th centuries when advances in technology led to massive economic changes. The "revolution" began in Great Britain.

3 Eli Whitney He revolutionized the South's economy with the invention of his cotton gin and greatly impacted the northern economy with his innovative concept of interchangeable parts.

4 Interchangeable Parts
Innovation of Eli Whitney's which allowed for more efficient production and helped industrialize the northern economy. It allowed parts to be replaced rather than whole products.

5 Cotton Gin A machine invented around 1790 which allowed people to process harvested cotton much faster by removing seeds. Impact: Made slavery and cotton production profitable.

6 Cotton Kingdom Nickname given to the South as cotton became its most profitable crop and the basis of the South's economy during the 1800s.

7 Samuel Slater A British immigrant who opened the first textile
mill in the United States in 1798.

8 Robert Fulton Revolutionized the shipment of manufactured goods and agricultural products with his steam-powered boat.

9 Invented the telegraph.
Samuel Morse Invented the telegraph.

10 John Deere Invented the steel plow to help farmers till the tough soil in the west.

11 Cyrus McCormick Invented the reaper.

12 Sectionalism Refers to the economic, social, cultural, and political differences that exist between different parts of the country.
