2 After the Mexican Revolution
1821: the Mexican government was welcoming Americans into its country in order to pay off its war debt.

3 Stephan F. Austin 27 yrs old empresario Fulfilling father’s dream.
Started a settlement of 300 American families on Brazos River.

4 Priceless! Austin sold land for 12 cents an acre. ( there was 4,428 acres in one league). TWO Rules enforced by Mexican Government: 1) Must become Roman Catholic 2) Obey all Mexican laws

5 1830 Estimated 30,000 Americans living in Tejas ( Texas).
Mexican government looking to stop immigration.

6 Come and Take It! Texans started to reject Mexican laws, especially the one that prohibits slavery in Texas. April 1833, 50 members gather in San Felipe de Austin to discuss possible separation from Mexico. Fighting between Texans and Mexican soldiers started in October of 1835.

7 March 2, 1836: Independence Day
At the same time , Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, dictator of Mexico, decided to crush the Texas rebellion with an army of 2400 troops. He had already stationed his troops around an abandoned mission in San Antonio called the Alamo.
