What do you do?
3
What do you do ? Purpose establishes an organization’s rationale for existence. It is what an organization strives to achieve, and once that purpose is established, it doesn’t waver. It also expresses the passion that brings social entrepreneurs and nonprofit employees to their work. A clear and appropriate purpose inspires, guides, and energizes everyone associated with the organization.
4
Who is your “customers”
The element of marketing that is least often understood by nonprofits is serving your customers. Out of all your stakeholders, your customer is the one who, more than anyone else, determines your survival and success. Your customer is not necessarily the people you serve.
5
What are you measuring Metrics have a way of focusing our attention. It’s human nature to spend our time, energy, and material resources to improve that which is being measured. To achieve your Mission, you have to focus on your desired outcomes—the results that fulfill your purpose. Not on inputs and outputs but rather on meaningful, long-term outcomes.
6
Practice Mutual Accountability
Successful organizations practice mutual accountability with every stakeholder. Mutual responsibilities are discussed up front, agreed on, and revisited as necessary throughout the relationship. When each party is held accountable for contributing to the venture, all parties have a vested interest in its success, and the venture is more likely to be successful.
7
Support Personal Empowerment
Empowerment means a particular set of cognitive and emotional skills coupled with a positive belief system. Using these skills, a person can manage his or her emotions, thinking, and behavior to achieve positive, long-term life goals.
8
Are you Learning Driven?
Great organizations aren’t distinguished by getting it right the first time. Few, if any, do this. Rather, they are learning driven. Experiment, Evaluate, Adjust, (again + again) Gather external intelligence and regularly question your assumptions and practices.
9
A Culture of Discipline
It is about getting disciplined people who engage in disciplined thought and who then take disciplined action Requires people who adhere to a consistent system; yet, gives people freedom and responsibility within the framework of that system.
