Introduction …………………………………………………………………………………………......
Thank you for your interest in communicating about the changeover of the round pound coin. The round pound was demonetised on Sunday 15 October, but we are still encouraging businesses and consumers to bank or donate their round pound coins. With Christmas around the corner, a time when people exchange gifts, there is an opportunity for charities to inspire the UK public to dig out and donate their remaining round pounds. This communications toolkit provides information which might help your charitable organisation communicate about the new 12-sided £1 coin and the round pound in the run up to the festive season. Why has the £1 coin been replaced?
The round £1 coin has been replaced for the first time in over thirty years because of its vulnerability to sophisticated counterfeiters. We introduced the new, highly secure 12-sided £1 coin on 28 March 2017 to reduce the costs of counterfeits to businesses and the taxpayer. Before the introduction of the new 12-sided £1 coin: 1 in 30 round pound coins in circulation were counterfeit 45 million counterfeit round pounds were in circulation 2 million counterfeit round pounds were removed from circulation every year. ……………………………………………………………………………………………...... What are the opportunities for charities?
HM Treasury and The Royal Mint have been working with the sector to highlight the fundraising opportunities that the return of the round pound presents to charities. You Gov data has highlighted around 5% of the public will donate their saved round pounds to charity. #Pound4Pound hashtag has been used on social media to encourage donations of round pounds upon receiving the new 12-sided £1 coin. The new £1 coin press team have already highlighted the success of several smaller charities that have been running fundraising campaigns around the round pound coin. As Christmas approaches, there’s still time for charities to run initiatives that encourage people to donate any remaining round pounds over the festive season. ……………………………………………………………………………………………...... Approved content For newsletters/releases/internal comms
Please use our approved copy: The Royal Mint is producing 1.4 billion new £1 coins at a rate of up to 2,000 each minute and a staggering three million in total every day. As some of the new coins will be made from the round pound coins, the UK public are being encouraged to return or donate their round pounds. The Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme was introduced on 6 April 2017 and will allow a Gift Aid style top-up payment for cash donations in situations where it would be difficult to get a Gift Aid declaration from a donor – for example in a High Street collecting tin. The total amount of donations charities can claim a top-up payment on each year, increased from £5,000 to £8,000 in April 2017. ……………………………………………………………………………………………...... New 12-sided £1 Coin
