2 Context This lesson has been designed around the following information - The My School website data Number of students Distribution of indigenous and EAL/D (adjustments for learner difference) Attendance rate (engaging and interesting activities to encourage attendance) Unit Summary - Students will be engaging with a range of technologies as they explore the current ecological state of their school and formulate a range of suggested improvement options. The unit, which focusses on the student’s observation, creation and team work skills, culminates with a video presentation which demonstrates their learning and investigation skills after the students have completed the unit.

5 What is Sustainability?
Environmental sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs (Queensland Government, 2012)

6 Brainstorming What words come to mind when you think of sustainability?

7 What is Recycling? Recycling – • conserves natural resources
• reduces greenhouse gas emissions • reduces landfill (Brisbane City Council, n.d.)

8 Recycling – looking at one small part of sustainability
Planet Ark Schools Recycle Right Challenge – Oct 17 to Nov 25 Recycling themed activities for the school – includes lesson plans! Over $5000 in prize money for the schools that win! Involves schools from all over Australia!

9 Brainstorming What is recycling all about? How do we know if something is recyclable? Why is it important to spread awareness about recycling? Who has recycled before? What did you recycle? How did you recycle?

10 What is in your bag… Activity Time! Time to open your bags and find out how much potential rubbish you are carrying! If you are planning on BUYING your lunch today, think about what it may come in – is this recyclable?

11 What do you recycle? How do you do it?
What can we recycle? - Food Scraps - Plastic container - Food packaging - Cling wrap - Water bottle - Lunch box - School bag - Uniform - Pencils & Books What do you recycle? How do you do it?

12 How can we present this useful information?

13 Ways of Presenting Data
Lists – Used to frame questions for the survey; can be a primary way of recording data Tables – Used to record statistical data in a simple format; can be a primary way of recoding data Graphs – Used to represent collected data for a purpose; specific graphs are used for different purposes (bar, pie, line) Maps – Used to represent features of land, directions, and record data; many different types of maps with different purposes (road, weather, topographical)

14 Graph Time!!! Why would we record and graph this information?
How does the graph help the reader interpret the information? Why do we need to present the data in different ways?

15 Graph Time!!! 3 questions – How many recyclable items do you have?
How many non-recyclable items? How many are re-usable? (spreadsheet)

16 Recycling in Our School
Assessment for the Unit – iMovie Presentation In groups of three, the students will collect data about rubbish issues in their school, before presenting this data in table and graph format along with solutions in a video presentation. Students will be given time in class to work on the assessment piece. Details: 2 – 3 minute final iMovie presentation All aspects of the video are present including - Survey results (pictures, data results) Data represented in table and graph format Interesting and intelligent solutions to the problem of rubbish suggested Presented in the correct format

17 Let's Have a Look!
