POWER By: Matt Reid

Reflective Introduction
Photographs can tell many stories. All images contain information. Information about what happened before the shot, what is happening in the picture, and sometimes it tells what is going to happen. Overall, graphics are a different way of looking at and examining information. Graphics represent and show so much more than written genre which means they can have a greater impact and a greater meaning. In this case, the images represent different forms of power. Power is having control. It is what everyone wants. Having power means being able to make a difference or make a change for the better and sometimes for the worse.

Reflective Introduction
The type of images I chose are mainly images of tragedy and images that show abuse of power. Power is something valued highly by many people and it is unfortunate that there are many people who take this power for granted and abuse it. I chose these images because most of them are very sad. I believe that sad images have the most impact on people. Most of these images show innocent people being injured and even killed. They show the misuse and abuse of power that is available to people.

Reflective Introduction
The pictures that were most personally to me were the graphics showing police abuse. After graduating, I hope to pursue a career with law enforcement. Whenever I see police abuse their power it upsets me. They are given this power to help and protect people; not to hurt them. When people see the images I have chosen, I want them to see the tragedy and sadness that is in the image and think about how many people abuse their power. Overall, this project has changed the way I perceive power. Before this assignment, I saw power as being a leader and making a difference for the better. Now I see that with power, people can make things worse and cause tragedies and sadness. This project has changed the way I see power in images.

Trace for Image 2 Text: The document is a photograph. This image is unique because there is a women that looks badly injured and has her hand over mouth which means she is reacting to something bad that just happened. The picture is about a women’s house that was bombed and her family killed. Reader: The intended audience for this image would be anyone who reads the news or lives in Syria that would know about it. I am not a part of this intended audience because I do not really read news articles or live in Syria. As a Reader, I am open to reading more news articles to learn about this stuff. Author: The photographer is Rodrigo Abd. The author most likely took the photograph for the news or he was just there at the time and decided to take pictures of the horrible event. Constraints: This is a powerful and compelling image which is most likely influenced the author. Exigence: I have no idea why this certain women’s house was bombed. Syria is not the safest place so it was most likely bad luck on her part. The author is involved with this image because he was there at the time for reasons unknown.

I am not a part of this audience. I am open to change by reading more news articles to learn about this stuff. Author: The author of this image is Pierre-Philippe Marcou. The author was most likely prompted to take the image for a news article or because he was a bystander and saw a chance to take a powerful photograph. Constraints: The image probably influenced the author because it shows the violent and harmful effects that happen at some protests. Exigence: Police Brutality is most likely what caused this man’s injury. The author’s involvement is being there while this was going on and taking the picture.

Trace for Image 5 Text: The document is a photograph. This image is unique because there is a family walking away from a cross memorial of the people that were killed in the Aurora movie theatre shooting. The image is about violence as well as remembrance. Reader: The Intended audience is anyone who lives in America as well as anyone in any other countries that read news articles. I am a part of this intended audience because I do watch news on the television about stuff that happens in America. There are no commonalities that I share with the author nor am I open to any changes. Author: The author of this image is Joe Raedie. The author was most likely prompted to take the picture for the news to show what families have done to remember their loved ones. Constraints: The sadness of this image and occasion is what influences the author to take the photograph. Exigence: The author is involved in this because a man shot and killed many people and because of this, people made a memorial of the ones who died, therefore giving the author a story to cover and a picture to take.
