Activity One: Getting Some Leverage on Simple Machines
WD Simple Machines Activity One: Getting Some Leverage on Simple Machines
2
Essential Questions What is a lever used for?
WD What is a lever used for? What are the parts of a lever system? How can I maximize the effectiveness of a lever system?
3
Vocabulary WD Resistance Force (load): is the force which an effort force must overcome in order to do work on an object Effort Force: the force used to move an object over a distance Effort Distance: the distance from the effort (on a lever) to the fulcrum
4
Vocabulary Cont. WD Lever: a simple machine that makes work easier for use; it involves moving a load around a pivot using a force Fulcrum: the support about which a lever turns
5
Goals Identify the effort force, the fulcrum, and the resistance force in a simple lever system. Recognize that the placement of the effort force , the fulcrum, and the resistance force will affect the effectiveness of the lever system. Be introduced to the effort force and the effort distance relationship.
6
Main Ideas WD Simple machines are common tools that are used to accomplish tasks A lever is a simple machine that is comprised of a fulcrum , an effort force, and a resistance force that must be overcome.
7
Main Ideas Cont. WD The arrangement of the effort force, the resistance force, and the fulcrum affects the effectiveness of the lever system and its ability to accomplish a task. The resistance force is sometimes referred to as the load force or simply the “load”. This is always a force and never an object.
