4. New Netherland
1621-The Dutch West India Company is granted land from Dutch Government
Found New Amsterdam (New York City) in 1625
The Dutch were able to profit from the fur trade

5. Diverse Colony
Want to attract colonists to come so they open up doors to a variety of people- Germans, French, Scandinavians, and other European
The Dutch generally enjoyed better relations with Native Americans than in New England and VA. More interested in trading fur with them

6. English Takeover
1664- Charles II gave his brother James, the Duke of York permission to drive out the Dutch
The Dutch surrendered without bloodshed and James named his new territory New York.
New Jersey was also created (British island of Jersey).

7. Pennsylvania
Founded by William Penn Charles II owed Penn’s father money so Charles II granted Penn American land.
Quakers: services without formal minister, oppose war, believed God’s “inner light” shined in everyone.
Every adult male got land and right to vote, freedom of religion
Created Philadelphia- “City of Brotherly Love”
Main Crop- Grain (Bread-Basket Colonies)

8. Native Americans
Penn regulated trade with Native Americans and provided a court so disputes could be handled
For more than 50 years, Pennsylvania had no major conflicts.

12. New England Religious motives spur Puritans to settle Massachusetts
Puritan Church maintains tight control over behavior in the community – John Winthrop “City on a Hill”
Forced out – Roger Williams (Rhode Island) & Anne Hutchinson (New Hampshire) – both challenged Puritan authority and teachings
