Class feedback You cannot see the poems as two separate things.
You are not comparing/contrasting the poems and this is the basics of it! You cannot see the poems as two separate things. In Ozymandias Shelley shows how power leads to leaders becoming demanding as Ozymandias states that other rulers should “look on my works and despair.” The imperative verb………………………….. This suggests………………………………………This also…………………………. This is similar to how the Duke also demands that the Count looks at his painting. Therefore both poems reveal how the speakers in the poems want to have control through their imperative tones.

Compare how the poets in remains and bayonet charge present conflict
differences and similarities! Bayonet Charge Structure Remains Structure
7
Bayonet Charge Structure
Remains Structure Enjambment to reflect how he feels out of control as he runs in a panic and immediate way. Uses caesura on line 15 as he stops like a statue when he has realised he has no purpose in the war. Both poems leave us with the image that the soldier has been badly affected by war. In Bayonet Charge however it shows war has dehumanised him to become “dynamite”. Both poems start in the middle of the fighting very much so with “suddenly he awoke”. Both poems have a free verse. Stanzas of different sizes to reflect the soldier’s chaos and how war was hectic and panicked. Similarly uses enjambment but to show how he feels out of control recalling how he killed for the first time as it has affected him deeply. Also uses caesura on line 20 however it is to show how the speaker tried to separate home from war yet he couldn’t. Whereas in Remains it leaves us with the image that he feels guilty and that the lives he has taken are still on his “bloody hands”. BOTH POETS STRUCTURALLY END TO SHOW US HOW WAR HAS A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON SOLDIER’S LIVES. Similar stlye of starting in the centre of the conflict “on another occasion”. Showing in both poems soldiers have to immediately fight. Free verse. However here we have stanzas of all the same sizes because the soldier is TRYING to control his thoughts but the enjambment reflects his failure.

Your task: write a page where you compare/contrast the structure of bayonet charge and remains.
LESSON OUTCOME: To write a quick structure paragraph where you seamlessly compare poems.

In both poems, the poets use enjambment to reflect how there is a lack of control in conflict. However in Bayonet Charge the enjambment is used to show how the soldier feels as if he has woken up and everything around him is chaotic. The enjambment stresses how he feels confused and Hughes wants the reader to feel this through the enjambment. Whilst Remains also uses enjambment, it is used in a different way because it is used to show how the soldier himself has lost control of his mind and is suffering PTSD from his experience of conflict. The enjambment in both poems is highlighting the negative and chaotic effects of war as an experience in the present and as an experience afterwards too. Together they show that as a current soldier or a veteran you will still feel like you have lost control since being a soldier.

Different things in the poems
Your turn The same things in the poems Similarly… Both poems… Also… Likewise… Equally in…. Different things in the poems However in… Yet… Whereas in… On the other hand… While ____ does this, ____ doesn’t because…. Use your table to write a paragraph where you look at the structure of both poems. Stay focused on how the structure presents IDEAS about war. Keep on top of comparing and contrasting with the connective boxes!
