Legal & Ethical Issues DaKera Day 2/23/2017 EDUC 303 Professor Riggs

2 Facebook/Social Media: Texas Pre-School fires teacher suspended over “Kill some jews” social media post How did this happen? A pre-school teacher in Arlington, Texas took her racist and violent thoughts to twitter and it was discovered to have encouraged her social media followers to “kill some Jews” How could it been avoided? The pre-school teacher could of easily just kept her thoughts to herself, and not broadcasted in on social media Where should the school/law/parents/students go from that point on? The parents should complain to the principal so that they’re students are learning in a safe environment, the school should fire her as they did, and the law shouldn’t be involved My personal opinion My personal opinion is that this lady should not work a school setting because she will encounter all different races, and who knows what will happen if she encounters a Jew. The school did the right thing by firing her.

3 Emailing/Texting: Former pella teacher sent inappropriate emails to students
How did this happen? On December 2, the Pella school districts was notified by a parent regarding inappropriate electronic communication between the parent’s children and Munoz, a Spanish teacher at the middle and high school. 42-year-old Juan Carlos Munoz was then arrested after turning himself in. How could it been avoided? This all could have been avoided if Munoz kept all conversations appropriate, professional, and in the classroom. Where should the school/law/parents/students go from that point on? The law should arrest them as they did for holding sexual explicit conversations with minors, the schools should fire him and he shouldn’t be allowed to teach anywhere, the parents should press chargers, and the students to be held accountable for their actions as well. My personal opinion Personally I’m glad that he was arrested, that clearly wasn’t a safe environment for the students, and he shouldn’t work with children again!

4 Plagiarism/copyright issues: “there’s no way you could’ve written something like that”
How did this happen? Laura McCarthy, a 20-year-old student from Dublin, received a 0% on her sixth form history essay about Mussolini, the comment on her paper said “there’s no way you could have written something like that”. When she confronted her teacher, he said he didn’t believe she could possibly know some of the words she had used. How could it been avoided? The teacher could of asked to meet with her and ask her did she actually write the paper, or talk to her and let her explain that she does in fact have a wide vocabulary, and not just accuse her of using words that are “too complex” for her age Where should the school/law/parents/students go from that point on The school should have a meeting with that teacher, the law shouldn’t be involved, the parent should complain as well as the students. My personal opinion I believe that, that this teacher shouldn’t judge anyone by their age, different people know different things, and that wasn’t his place to tell her “there’s no way you could’ve written something like that”

5 Cyberbullying: ryan halligan loses his life to taunts, rumors, and cyberbulyying
How did this happen? Ryan Patrick Halligan was a 13 year old student in Vermont, US. Ryan Halligan was bullied by his classmates in school and cyber bullied online. At some point , a schoolmate claimed she had a crush on him while they talked online, but everything he said and shared with her was also shared with the rest of the school. Ryan was threatened, insulted, and taunted incessantly at school and online. He committed suicided at the age of 13 How could it been avoided? Beings though Ryan and the rest of the students were so young, they could have monitored the conversations that were being held online. Ryan could have talked to his parents, friends, and/or teachers Where should school/law/parents/students go from that point on? The school should suspended those children because bullying was being done on school grounds, and they should talk more about bullying and the effects, the law should be involved due to a life being lost, parents should press chargers, and students should be more aware of suicide Personal opinion. I believe that students should go talk to someone and let someone know your being bullied, and students that are being the bully should know that people die everyday from it. I think that we should talk more about it in schools so that we are aware.
