Scenario Olivia shared her password with her BFF, Emily when she went on holiday so Emily could be her streaksitter. Olivia trusts Emily. Recently Olivia has started receiving follow requests and nasty messages. It also looks like she has been sending nasty messages too. Olivia is being ignored at school and isolated in the grounds and on social networks. What would you advise?
8
Considerations How old is Olivia? Is she over 13 and able to sign-up to Social Networks. If under 13, might this be an opportunity to discuss resilience and maturity considerations when using social networks? Help Olivia re-gain control. Most social networks offer the option to ‘re-gain control of a hacked account’. Activate this and follow the steps. Initiate a wider educative response. Is it acceptable to behave in this way when someone you trusted has abused that position? What actions has Olivia taken already if any?
9
Scenario You become aware that a professional you work with has lost control of an image and this has been widely shared. Their Facebook page settings are strong and privacy is good. Eventually they discover an impersonation account. This has used a public profile picture and converted it into a derogatory meme. The professional is receiving hurtful and abusive comments on the impersonation and their own account. This is having a negative impact on their reputation.
10
Considerations Has the photo been taken without their consent? If so, then reporting to the social network under abuse of privacy or if a logo is involved, then theft of intellectual property. Act quickly. Often in cases like this, too much time elapses between the incident and the report. Check privacy settings again. Settings often change and it is good practice to check these regularly.
11
Policy All SWGfL template policies now available in one place
To what extent is online safety included in your policies for: Behaviour Safeguarding Filtering Monitoring Acceptable Use Agreements Social Media Mobile devices?
12
Monitoring How many online safety cases do you have every year?
Is this increasing or decreasing? How is the senior leadership team (inc. Governors) tackling online issues? Monitoring forms – online or offline? Designated Senior Person needs to monitor these safeguarding issues.
