Reading Workshop For Parents & Students 2016 (Aimsweb)

Reading Workshop Hello Everyone, Thank you for attending this reading workshop. The purpose of the workshop is for you and your child to understand how the Aimsweb diagnostic assessment scores are determined and how these scores are used in our classroom.

Reading Workshop Aimsweb Testing Each year the students are given diagnostic assessments to determine the words they read in 1-minute and their understanding of words accuracy in sentences. Your students know these test as Aimsweb and it is given three times a year (beginning of school, winter and spring).

The MAZE measures comprehension.
Reading Workshop The Curriculum Based Measure (CBM) determines how many words a person can read in 1-minute (wpm). Your child is given 3 stories to read aloud to the teacher. Each story is timed for 1-minute. If an error is made the teacher notes the error. The words per minute is determine by number of correct words read in 1-minute The MAZE measures comprehension. Your child is given a story to read silently. 3 minutes are given. Your child circles one of the words in parenthesis that helps makes the sentence appropriate based in the content of the sentence or story.

Reading Workshop The CBM and MAZE then gives us the following: Level of Skill (Average, Above Average, Well Above Average, Below Average and Well Below Average Instructional Recommendation (Continue Current Program, Immediate Problem Solving, Consider Need for Individualized Program

Reading Workshop The Aimsweb test also provides a Lexile Measure The Lexile Measure is a tool that provides a persons readability level or determines the complexity of a text, article, novel, passage, etc. Your child was given their Aimsweb Report to share with you. They also had a conference with the teacher. Please review the report, have a discussion, sign/date the report by the date indicated in the agenda.

Reading Workshop Lexile Levels As you can see from the website and video, your child’s Lexile level can help them select their appropriate level books. By matching the Lexile range of text with your child’s interest in topics, they may be able to select better novels, non-fiction books and enjoy reading.

How Does This (Lexile) Work In Our Classroom?
Reading Worksho How Does This (Lexile) Work In Our Classroom? -Throughout the school year, your child will be engaged in reading a novel, several short stories and non-fiction articles. The readings were either presented via audio, visual, read aloud by a teacher/student(s) or read silently. - Many of the readings so far were in your child’s Lexile range.

Reading Workshop How Does Note-Taking Work In Our Classroom? Note-Taking skills have been guided by the teacher(s) in the following formats: Guided notes Step by step guidance Graphic organizers Interactive Graphic Organizer Book created by your child Drawings Analyzing Photos and more

Reading Workshop How Does Testing Work In Our Classroom? Individual tests are administered in 1-2 versions based on Lexile levels. It usually measures comprehension, vocabulary, short answer response (1-2 sentences with details) and extended response (1-2 paragraphs) with details.

What have the teachers noticed so far?
Reading Workshop What have the teachers noticed so far? Your child is bright and has the ability to do even better. The students are not listening to the teachers instructions NOR reading the directions on the tests and therefore LOSING points to get a higher grade.

Reading Workshop Ask for help right away.
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Your child should read EVERYDAY (book, magazine, directions, recipes, etc.) Review the syllabus for the required novel readings and AR tests for homework grades. They have to read and follow instructions on classwork, homework and tests. Ask for help right away. Take notes, study, keep them in their binders or turn in. Follow the classroom rules and expectations. Understand that school is for learning and not socializing during instruction times and transitioning from one location to another.
