Lessons Divided by Standard
EOC D.1.K Explain how natural selection and its evolutionary consequences provide a scientific explanation for the fossil record of ancient life-forms and the striking molecular similarities observed among the diverse species of living organisms
2
Fossils Similar fossils were found in some layers and not others. Older fossils in lower layers. This showed that organisms changed with the environment.
3
Evidence for Evolution In Fossils
The Fossil Record-Layer show change Geographic Distribution of Living Things Homologous Body Structures How organisms adapted to different environments as the Earth changed.
4
Fossils A fossil is the preserved remains or imprints of ancient organisms. Someone who studies fossils is called a paleontologist. Fossils are found in sedimentary rock formed when sand and silt settle to the bottom of water. Not all animals turn are fossilized, why? Do you think we have a complete fossil record?
5
Determining ages of Fossils
Relative dating- Looks at the layer of the earth they are found. The oldest fossils will be deeper. Radioactive dating Determined by remaining radioactive isotopes the fossil contains.
6
Evidence of Evolution DNA All living things have DNA Genome Sequencing
Human DNA 98% similar to the ape.
7
